Hon. Bashe Yusuf Ahmed

Before his appointment as Chief Justice, Ahmed served as a Senior Legal Advisor in the National Independent Electoral Commission of Somalia (NIEC) and as a Senior Case Management and Administration Expert in the Supreme Court from 2017 to 2018. In these roles, he played a crucial part in developing legal frameworks and administrative procedures that aimed to ensure fair and transparent electoral processes. Ahmed’s extensive legal experience includes his tenure as Senior Legal Counsel in the Somaliland House of Representatives and the Somaliland Electoral Commission. His work with these legislative bodies involved providing legal advice on legislative matters, electoral laws, and governance issues, contributing significantly to the legislative development in the region.

His commitment to justice and human rights is further exemplified by his work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where he contributed to initiatives aimed at strengthening legal institutions and promoting human rights in Somalia. As a lawyer and human rights defender, he has been an advocate for the protection of individual rights and the establishment of a fair judicial system. In addition to his legal and advisory roles, Ahmed has a strong background in academia. He served as a senior lecturer at the University of Hargeisa, where he educated and mentored future legal professionals. His academic contributions have helped shape the curriculum and enhance the quality of legal education in Somalia.

Bashe Yusuf Ahmed holds a law degree and has participated in various international legal forums and training programs to further his expertise. His leadership as Chief Justice is marked by efforts to modernize the judiciary, improve access to justice, and promote judicial independence. He has been instrumental in implementing reforms that aim to rebuild trust in Somalia’s legal system and ensure that it meets international standards. Under his stewardship, the Supreme Court has undertaken initiatives to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the judiciary. Ahmed continues to play a pivotal role in Somalia’s journey towards stability and democratic governance, with a vision to uphold the rule of law and foster institutional development.
